  • Purpose is broad and never changes. As a believer, your ultimate purpose is to know God and to glorify Him.
  • Calling is specific. It’s the unique way God asks you to live out that purpose in this season of your life. Your calling can grow or shift as God leads, but it will always align with His larger purpose for you.

“There are plenty of others who are more qualified than I am to do something about that.”

But when I realized that my calling was unique and tailor-made for me, I began to see how God was leading me toward the exact business I was meant to build. I wasn’t 100% confident in my own skills, but I knew that if this was where God wanted me, He would equip me with His strength and the skills needed to be successful.

The story of Nehemiah offers a powerful blueprint for entrepreneurs as we discern our calling. Nehemiah didn’t just have a vague sense of purpose—he had a clear assignment from God: rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

What we learn from Nehemiah’s calling:

  • It started with him noticing a burden God placed on his heart.
  • He prayed before taking action.
  • It aligned with his skills and leadership ability.
  • He moved forward despite opposition.
  • It required faith and action.

If you’re ready to stop spinning your wheels, here are three practical steps you can take today:

What gap or problem stirs something deep in you? What makes you say, “Someone should do something about that?” What energizes you? That burden is often a clue to your assignment.

God rarely calls you to something completely disconnected from how He’s already wired you. List out your natural skills, experiences, and spiritual gifts. How might they serve others in a way that glorifies God and creates value in the marketplace?

Clarity comes through action. Prayer and reflection are the solid foundation—but pairing them with movement is what confirms direction. Don’t wait for the full picture before moving forward. Like Nehemiah, take the next faithful step, and trust God to unfold the rest.
