As a Christian founder, I used to think that business growth meant doing more or having more. Adding more offers, more effort, more strategy. That’s what the business world taught us, right? More equals better. But somewhere along the way, I started realizing that God doesn’t work like that.
In His Kingdom, growth doesn’t always come through addition. Sometimes, it starts with subtraction.
Before He multiplies your fruit, He often multiplies your faith. And He does that through pruning. It’s the kind of cutting that feels uncomfortable, but ultimately leads to greater strength and fruitfulness. In John 15, Jesus tells us that every branch that bears fruit will be pruned so it can bear even more. It’s such a hard truth, because we expect obedience to produce addition. Yet often, God’s first move is to cut back what’s already working—not because He’s disappointed, but because He sees something we can’t and he wants to make space for what’s greater.

This fall, as I’ve been harvesting my tomato plants, this truth about pruning moved from theory to experience.
When I planted my first real garden earlier this summer, I did what most of us do when learning something new. I watched a few YouTube videos, grabbed some tools, and hoped for the best, determined to grow a bountiful harvest. I quickly learned that pruning is an essential part of it, that to help a tomato plant thrive, you have to cut away even the healthy branches, called “suckers” so the fruit can flourish.
At first, it felt wrong. I remember standing in my garden, scissors in hand, feeling anxious about cutting something green and alive, thinking, “What if I ruin it?” But the more I trusted the process, the more fruit appeared. Even now, in October, my vines are heavy with ripening tomatoes—long after multiple harvests.
Why do we need to prune tomato plants? Because they need air circulation around the branches to breathe and sunlight to ripen the fruit. If the branches grow too dense, they suffocate themselves, opening the plant up to disease and blocking the very sunlight and space they need to thrive.
And in that quiet moment, standing there surrounded by vines and sunlight, I sensed God whisper, “I work the same way in you.” He removes even healthy branches—relationships, offers, opportunities, and commitments—not to harm us, but to create margin. We too need space to breathe, allowing our fruit to multiply. Pruning doesn’t destroy life. It multiplies it.
When something falls away, we often view that loss through a negative lens. We may even see it as a form of failure or discipline. But pruning isn’t about punishment—it’s about preparation.
I once had a “dream client”—values-aligned, kind, fulfilling work. But when God nudged me to release that client, I wrestled with the decision. It made no sense. I resisted. I rationalized. I prayed for clarity, but deep down, I already knew. So, I obeyed. And when I did, God quickly opened the door to new opportunities at Rocket Fuel University and EOS Worldwide—roles that completely transformed my understanding of systems and scaling.
God never cuts without purpose. He prunes to position.
If you’ve been feeling a holy restlessness—like you’re circling the same mountain or sitting at a frustrating plateau—you may be in a pruning season.
Here are seven common areas where God often invites Christian founders to release what’s good so He can make room for what’s greater:
If you sense that God is pruning something in this season—whether it’s a mindset, a relationship, or a project—take heart. He’s not disciplining; He’s preparing you.
Pruning is how God realigns your business with His Kingdom purpose. When you release the dead, withering branches, and also the healthy, vibrant “suckers”, you create space for what’s next.
So pause, pray, and ask:
“Lord, what are You asking me to release? What am I clinging to that looks good but no longer bears lasting fruit?”
Then, be brave enough to ask the harder question:
“Am I willing to let go and trust You with the pruning?”
Because the truth is—pruning hurts. But it also heals. And on the other side of surrender is abundance you can’t yet imagine. He’s not taking from you. He’s making room for more.
If you’re ready to get clarity on what’s been blocking your fruitfulness—spiritually or strategically—The Called Entrepreneur™ Accelerator can help.
Inside, you’ll gain the strategic structure and spiritual discernment to identify what’s misaligned, simplify what matters, and finally move forward in faith and momentum.
Growth in the Kingdom doesn’t always look like expansion. Sometimes, it looks like obedience.
The very thing God is asking you to lay down today might be the seed of tomorrow’s harvest.
Trust His process, even when it feels painful or uncertain.
Because the fruit that follows surrender will always be sweeter than anything you could have produced on your own.
He’s not taking from you. He’s making room for more.
